Why the Census?

One of the strengths of the domestic work industry is the freedom from stringent rules, labels, and conventions that allow families and providers alike the ability to find the individualized and specific fit for their needs.

Unfortunately, this can simultaneously limit the industry with few standardizations for wage increases, industry standards, and benefits- and there very few locations to access this data to inform compensation decisions or to get an accurate pulse on the profession.

Historically, nannies have relied on the Salary & Benefits surveys provided by the International Nanny Association (INA). This project was paused for several years and the Nanny Census Report (NCR) was first created in 2022 to fill the gap. The initial results indicated that a small number of participants in the NCR were INA members, suggesting that the two data sets may be capturing distinct groups of domestic workers; The census report is still valuable, compounding wage information to the INA survey when it returned.

Care dot com also releases an annual Cost of Care Report surveying 2,000 families, but reported wages are generally considered low by many in the industry.

In 2024, a comparable sample size was achieved with a total of 2,151 participants.
